Benefit for Cynthia Stanton McKnight

I hope the place is hoppin' as friends gather tonight for this important fundraiser.

Though most of us can't travel to be there, we can still support our cousin/niece.

As Cynthia wrote on Facebook,
"Received my formal letter from Northwestern today acknowledging my name on the National Kidney Registry! WooHoo
I had promised my friends that I would post this. If anyone would like some more information you can message me, Milton Scott McKnight, Kristin Elaine Mantta Tothfalusi,or Eluides Pagan. At the moment feel very humbled and blessed by the actions of all of my friends who are doing this for me. I don't Tweet but..#grateful. LOL"

Back-to-School time

This photo of Gammon School was taken around 1909. The picture was submitted by our cousin Alberta Anderson (Betty's daughter) on the Dallas County MOGenWebpage.

The teacher is identified as Florence Quigley who afterward became Florence Ellis.

The Highbargers would be Grandma Stanton's brothers. I have the Highbargers' birth order as being:

James - I knew him as Uncle Jim. He and Aunt Blanche were school teachers and lived at the top of the hill from Grandma and Grandpa Stanton. I have "blue pickles" also written next to his name. Does anyone remember what that refers to?

Everett - described as being "good looking". He later went to California, correct?

Alonzo Bryan - "smoked and loved to tease the kids" is a description I've heard.

Hazel - our Grandma

Roscoe - "good dancer, took a gun with him on Saturday nights". I also see Uncle Roscoe's name spelled Rosco. Which one is correct?

Please correct any information I have wrong and I'd love it if you'd add your memories
of these relatives.

More ideas for blackberries...

My friend, Joyce Cooper, just told me about blackberry dumplings! She writes:

"I just made them once. My mom would press the berries in a sieve to get the juice. Bring the juice and a lot of sugar to a boil in large pot. Thicken with cornstarch. Roll out biscuit dough. Cut into small pieces and drop into juice until cooked. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream. Yum!"

 

I could go for some blackberry dumplings right now (and later tonight, in the morning, etc.)..

 

 

 

After I sent the post I also thought about blackberry jam. When you open a jar of jam or some canned or frozen blackberries in the winter, doesn't it take you back to those days of summer?

Yes, I am sitting in air-conditioned comfort. I know that blackberry pickin' comes with hot, hot weather, humidity, terrible allergy symptoms for some, stickers, thorns, chiggers, ticks, and the ever-present possibility of snakes. 

 

I was at a restaurant with my Dad, Herb, recently and one of the special desserts was blackberry pie. I was buying and asked him if he wouldn't love that delicious summer-time offering. He said no. No?!

 

He said he remembered his Mother, my Grandma Stanton, canning 40 gallons of blackberries each summer.  They were picked from multiple places around the home place and he said he remembers who did the pickin'. So, thanks to all of the blackberry pickers everywhere. I appreciate you.

 



 

 





Congratulations to Cody Hagan and Chelsea Cole!

A happy news announcement for another great-great-grandson of Ralph and Hazel.

Cody Hagan and Chelsea Cole will be married to day.

They have recently graduated from college and will be transferring to UMKC Grad School and Law School. Best Wishes!

Following is the letter Cynthia Stanton-McKnight wrote to us, her family members:

Hello Stanton Family.

 I am not able to make it again to the reunion and Jeanine has offered to relay this information to you for me. (Thanks Jeanine!)

As many of you already know, I have renal disease stage 5. Basically that means my kidneys have completely failed and right now I am using dialysis to keep as healthy as I can be right now. I was diagnosed approximately 3 years ago and have survived many hospitalizations and at times fighting for my life to end up here. I am reaching out to my family for help. Besides, I believe a family is the strongest form of help anyone can reach out to and Lord knows there are many of us in the Stanton family.

I will begin the kidney transplant evaluation process through Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago on June 17^th. I am reaching out to anyone who may have ever considered donating an organ. My best shot at a match is family. Here is some information that I want you to know:

·         Big Myth: I will die without a kidney. I will not die if I don’t get a kidney, but it will improve my life dramatically. I can live on dialysis for years, but being hooked up to machine that cleans my blood 3 days a week for 4 hours a day is cumbersome.

·         By no means do I want anyone to feel like they HAVE to get tested or obligated (for lack of a better word) to get tested or donate. In fact, I will not know who tried or not, unless someone turns out to be a good match for me.

·         All of the testing and evaluation process is paid for by my insurance and Northwesters transplant program. The only things that are not paid for is if during the evaluation, something comes to light in your physical that is not part of the transplant evaluation and your physician want more tests.

·         Northwestern has told me that most if not all tests can be done locally and results sent to Northwestern.

·         The surgery itself for the donor is actually a pretty simple procedure. It is amazing when you think about it. It is done by laparoscope and you are only in the hospital for 1-2 days generally. The surgery would have to be done up here in Chicago, but most follow-up care can be done locally. I believe that if you donate you may need to come up here for a couple check-ups in the year following the donation.

Our cousin and Uncle Harold's and Aunt Phyllis' daughter, Cynthia Stanton-McKnight, shown above with husband Scott, is needing a kidney transplant. There is a chance that one of us, her family, could be a living donor. Below is part of her posting taken from Facebook:

It is official. After the results of my blood type, match, some DNA test, I will be put on the Registry for a kidney. THIS IS WHERE I NEED YOUR HELP! The average waiting time for a deceased donor is 5 years. I am reaching out to anyone who may have ever considered donating an organ. I have the information you need and would be more than happy to pass it along. Please feel free to talk to other people who may have considered it.

If nothing else, prayer and positive thoughts headed our way is appreciated. This is a huge undertaking: spiritually, financially, physically, and emotionally for me and Scott. want to thank all of you for the support and initial questions.

40th Anniversary!

Reunion 2013 almost here!

I hope you're making plans for this year's reunion.
We have been having wonderfully-cool weather in Missouri.
Could the 70-degree days hold out another week and a half?
If so, we might be able to experience a reunion not filled with sweat on our brows and enough humidity to change any one's hairdo.

I'm still forever grateful to Harold, Phyllis and David for clearing out the backyard of the home place (where the pictures above were taken). There was a giant log, too big to cut with a chainsaw, concrete, etc. that would still be there if it wasn't for Harold bringing his tractor.

Reunion 2013

I hope you all have Saturday, June 15 on your calendar.
(This is the day before Father's Day).

The reunion will once again be at Bennett Spring State Park.

Family members that are staying in the cabins will begin arriving Friday evening.


Saturday's highlights are the family meal and auction to benefit the cemetery fund.
